Infractions, although handled in the criminal courts of North Carolina, are not crimes but can still have significant impact on your ability to drive legally or severely impact your insurance rates.

Felonies are crimes that, generally speaking, carry a maximum possible punishment of more than one year. Misdemeanors are crimes that, again generally speaking, carry a maximum possible punishment of less than one year. Infractions carry fines and court costs only.
